President's Message - November 2012

By Charisse Witherspoon
President, NAWBO Chicago
President/CEO, Witherspoon Marketing Group, Inc.

Along with numerous types of economic and social-related support, NAWBO also continues to propel women entrepreneurs into political spheres of power. Do November elections make you think about running for office?  What about running for your office?

As a NAWBO Chicago  member, you can learn a lot about business development and relationship management from successful, and failed, political campaigns, while you also campaign for new customers and new business from existing ones. For instance, you can look at the sales in areas in which you are comfortable that you will have a "win," and compare them to prospective customers or clients who remain undecided. You can research their voting behaviors of the past, meaning purchases from you/others, and messages that resonate with different demographics.

You can look at the "campaign promises" of the competition, and see if there is room for improvement. After your thorough research and design of a great message, you still focus on visibility, delivery and other initiatives that get your prospects "to the polls" (your cash register or contract).

Of course, the strategies are usually more complex than mentioned here and often time-intensive. But even making cold calls for candidates can also help you feel more comfortable making cold calls for yourself. There are other customer service "teachable moments." If you complain about the politician who only shows up during election season, you do not want to be the business owner who only accelerates customer service when a competitor is gaining traction or a contract renewal is on the table.

And the "victory speech" should be ongoing. Start a new campaign this Thanksgiving, or sooner. Use the NAWBO Chicago membership list to meet a new customer or prospective project partner. Request an Advisory Board session for confidential feedback on growing your business. Attend the December 13 Holiday Party and bring a friend with you. Then, decide to come early and enjoy a new member orientation (which also is an enjoyable and valuable refresher for existing members). And, you can get an early start on your 2013 NAWBO resolutions to maximize your membership.

For now, Happy Thanksgiving!!!!

All the best,

Charisse

Connections Corner

NAWBO members are making business generating connections every day.  Find out who’s making connections at NAWBO’s Connections Corner.

Help propel women entrepreneurs into economic, social, and political spheres of power and shop NAWBO first!  These members did.  Read these recent examples of NAWBO members doing reciprocal business together:

Phyllis Malitz, CPA, a partner with the Skokie-based firm of Silver Lerner Schwartz & Fertel (SLSF) and a longtime NAWBO member, has a longstanding practice of doing business with other NAWBO members.  Earlier this year, when SLSF needed help developing a set of staff biographies and a series of service area issue narratives, Phyllis brought in Diane Valletta, Valletta Associates marketing communications, to do the writing.   And last year, when she was nominated for the Illinois CPA Society's Women To Watch -- Experienced Leader award, Phyllis turned to Diane to write what proved to be a winning award nomination package for her.  This business relationship is a two-way street; Phyllis is Diane's CPA, and Diane appreciates the valuable accounting, tax, and business planning advice she receives from Phyllis.

Take advantage of this free PR and share your NAWBO connections!  To submit your story, please contact Michele Katz, mkatz@advitamip.com, of Advitam IP.
