 President's Message - August 2012

By Charisse Witherspoon
President, NAWBO Chicago
President/CEO, Witherspoon Marketing Group, Inc.

Greetings, NAWBO Chicago!

Before we started our businesses, many of us had bosses and/or women who  we got to know --and watch -- for leadership traits including what to prioritize and what (ok, who) to ignore in favor of a bigger picture and a greater good.  One such person in my experience was long-time General Manager and founding CEO of WBEZ Radio (91.5 FM) Carole Nolan who died last month.  Even thinking about Carole and thinking about radio brought my thoughts right back to NAWBO Chicago.

Also looking at a recent list of radio formats, I was reminded that there are many similarities in what we are doing as an organization and what a radio programmer uses as a backdrop...but with one big difference:

Like radio, NAWBO Chicago also is involved in establishing a format(s)and marketing that brand. Like radio, NAWBO formats constantly evolve to cater to market preferences and encourage higher ratings, which we measure through your participation and feedback.

But the big difference is that, unlike the example of a traditional radio station, NAWBO Chicago addresses a number of preferences at the same time.  You, as a member, can enjoy the simultaneous benefits of established events such as the Annual Achievement Luncheon (classical masterpieces) and more recently, NAWBO DAY. We also offer the strength of our multi-talented members (classic, women who rock), we look forward with Next Generation Outreach (urban contemporary and soft rock), help inform public policy via the advocacy and the Political Action Committee (news and public affairs), and more.

And of course, our valuable and ongoing networking is our version of talk radio.

You get the point. And like all radio stations, we cherish our essential corporate sponsors.

I encourage you to have some fun this year and imagine NAWBO as your personal radio station. You can adjust your dial to tune into that self-directed favorite – WII-FM (What’s In It For Me). Much like a Chicago resident taking a tour of Chicago, I encourage you to give new attention to tuning in to our new programming and the new things going on in your NAWBO.

See you soon,

Charisse Witherspoon

By Diane Valletta

Don't miss this stimulating and informative networking event hosted by Goldman Sachs and the 10,000 Small Businesses program, in an elegant yet welcoming River North setting.  The evening's venue is DIRTT Environmental Solutions, an award-winning Calgary-based manufacturer of custom modular architectural interiors located at 325 North Wells St., #1000.

A zero based manufacturer, DIRTT (Doing It Right This Time) recycles old blue jeans into denim insulation for home builders, and the company was recently proclaimed a "Rockstar of the New Economy" by Fast Company magazine.  DIRTT's Chicago showroom features a glamorous demonstration of office interior space possibilities, and an inviting setting for networking, building connections, and strengthening relationships.

Representatives from Goldman Sachs will be present to explain the 10,000 Small Businesses (10KSB) Program and the valuable support and benefits it can offer you and your business.  Program alumnae will also be on hand to share their experiences and how 10KSB helped their business. The 10KSB program is designed to help local small business owners create jobs and economic opportunity by providing them with greater access to business education, financial capital and business support services.  Small business owners accepted into the program will study accounting, human resources, negotiation and marketing.  Accepted applicants will also participate in one-one-one business advising sessions, accounting workshops and expert clinics.

Business owners eligible to apply for 10KSB are required to have been in business for two years or more; and typically to have at least four employees, a revenue stream of $150K to $4.0 million per year, and a business poised for growth.  Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis for the next business and management program starting in January 2013.

We invite you and your guests to join us at the Member rate of $10! To register, please visit www.NAWBOChicago.org and click on "Connecting Over Cocktails."

NAWBO members are making business generating connections every day.  Find out who’s making connections at NAWBO’s Connections Corner.

Help propel women entrepreneurs into economic, social, and political spheres of power and shop NAWBO first!  These members did.  Read these recent examples of NAWBO members doing business with other members:

Diana Conley was helping Maureen Wozniak of Contact Karma out by listing her firm, Advotek Inc. on Contact Karma. Maureen had explained she was very light on PC tech companies. Contact Karma was able to send one new potential client to Diana who is in the process of meeting with them. Mana Ionescu, Lightspan Digital, not only became a member who listed her firm to support Contact Karma but purchased an on-going offer of a Business Templates Software from them. Thanks, Ladies!

NAWBO member and Girl Scout Troup Leader Sherry Caffrey purchased the bulls tickets of Emily Smith of Chicagoland Commercial Real Estate. Emily then donated the $300 dollars for the tickets to the Badge to Business Event earlier this year. Everybody wins!
